I’ve started reading a new book called “Chasing Lincoln’s Killer” and until now I have not found the book super exciting as the previous books I’ve read which indeed started great and hooked me immediately. The united states had a civil war which lasted 4 years and started in 1961. This was the year that Abraham came to office as the president of the United States. After 4 years of bloody battle and as a result more than 600,000 casualties. The war consisted on two sides, north and south. In the north the money came from factories and industrial product but from the south it came from slave work, hard work at the different farms. There was another problem which was that the southern states had the right to secede if the U.S government did not agree on the right to have slaves and treat them like property, so if they secede, the United States would be in trouble and lose its power. Finally confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered his troops from the south but it didn’t stop other troops from fighting although it was a big step for the war to be over. Lincoln wanted the war to be over and he made it happen, he even gave black people the right of suffrage. This really made the actor, J. Wilkes Booth furious which led to the idea of killing the president and to his luck, he wouldn’t be going after the president, but the president would go towards him. Booth was an actor and to his luck, president Lincoln would be going to the Ford’s Theatre at Washington D.C., which Booth as an actor knew perfectly. Booth planned out the assassination at perfection due to his knowledge of the play that Lincoln would be watching. He only chose two weapons for the incident: a .44 caliber single shot pistol and a Rio Grande camp knife. At night while Lincoln was watching a single man scene of high comedy where everyone would laugh, Booth showed his anger towards Lincoln because of the fall of richmond (the south) by shooting him a bullet through his head making the bullet freeze and remain in his brain ultimately killing, the president of the United States.
QUOTES
“ Sic semper tyrannis!”
Finally some excitement passed through my veins, well not excitement but it freaked me out and I like that feeling while reading because it makes stuff more interesting. This is what Booth said right after he shot president Lincoln in the head. The phrase above in Latin means in English “Thus always to tyrants!” And even more explicit, “Thus always I bring death to tyrants!”. When I read the meaning which was further mentioned in the book, shocked me making me say “ Wow! This dude is crazy!”. I reflected on the fact that there were and are until now people like Booth who have an unreasonable idea stucked in their heads, for Booth it was to support and protect the South at all cost, even the president’s life at the time. I immediately thought of the terrorist group of ISIS who are a group of people like Booth, they have an idea in their heads so deep that morality doesn't apply towards the idea and ends up causing enormous conflict.
CONCLUSION
This book may have not cause an immediate hook between the reader and the book but it sure does catch your attention with the they way that the content is distributed throughout the book.I previously thought that the person that killed Lincoln was actually never known for some reason but there turned out to be an author for president Lincoln’s assassination at the Ford’s theatre. I am excited to keep on reading since I am pretty curious to know what happened after the murder.
